FAQ Botox/Dysport

Are there any restrictions on activities I can perform?

Because of precision injection, no need to limit activities after the procedure.  We recommend avoiding excess pressure in the injected area for 24 hours, i.e. scuba diving using a diving mask.

When does the product start working?

Varies in individual.  Usually starts working in the first 24-48 hours, with the maximal result at one week.  Maximum effect subsides after one month.

How will I know that it’s working?

The answer depends on the area that was treated.
If you received treatment on your upper face, you may simply notice that you look less tired and more lifted.   If your lines are deep, it will take time for your body to gradually fill in the wrinkles.  Using good topical collagen-stimulating Vitamin C serum will help reduce the wrinkles faster.

If your forehead was treated, you may experience a lifting effect of the forehead.  Making you look more refreshed.  If you try to move forehead muscles that have been relaxed, you may start recruiting other muscles to do so.  Thus we recommend not trying to exercise muscles that have been relaxed.

If you received injections for underarm hyperhidrosis, you will notice that the sweat odor will decrease and your underarms stay dry.

If you received an injection to decrease jaw muscle size, you will notice the volume of your muscle to start decrease after one month.

How long will the results last?

Botox and Dysport are both Botulinin A.  Most require 3-4 treatments per year with Botox were like only  1-2 treatments with Dysport. Results should last for about 3-5 months, with slight variations depending on the area that was treated and the amount injected.

What are the most common side effects after my treatment?

Mild swelling is the most common and transient side effect reported. They usually resolve within 30 min.
There is less than a 2 % chance of eyelid swelling when the product is injected around the eyes for the treatment of “crow’s feet” wrinkles. This is due to decreased lymphatic drainage from decreased muscle movement.  It is self-limited and can minimize with a gentle massage.  It is usually mild and will resolve in 1 month as the maximum effect of Botox/Dysport passes.

There is less than a 1% chance of lid ptosis when an upper eyelid droops down and can’t stay up. This can happen when the area between the eyebrows is treated as the product may travel a little too close to the nerve responsible for opening and closing your eye. If this occurs, often will improve immediately with eye drops but can take several weeks to resolve.   This is a rare condition and is best avoided by seeing an expert injector with an understanding of facial muscle anatomy.

Most faces are not perfectly symmetrical with stronger facial muscles on one side than the other.  Expert injectors will try to make your face look more symmetrical by adjusting for dosages of the medication.   Most facial asymmetries can be corrected however many do not notice their inherent asymmetry until after their procedure.  Important to see an expert injector to make the proper aesthetic adjustments.

When should I make my next treatment appointment?

It is usually recommended to make an appointment in 3-6 months after your last treatment

How will I know when I need to return?

Most patients return for Dysport once or twice per year.  Usually, before holidays, special events, or birthdays when we want to look and feel our best.  It is also a good idea to look fresh for work or zoom.   It is time to come back if you are starting looking more tired, angry, and sad.

If you receive treatment to the slim lower cheek area, you should receive two treatments 4-6 months apart within the first year.  To maintain results after the first year, repeat injection once per year.

If you received the treatment for your facial wrinkles,  you should not wait for the muscles to fully start moving again. Once should return for the next treatment session when about 75% of muscle activity is regained. This will ensure that the muscle will still be in a relaxed state and has not allowed wrinkles to return. With regular injections, we trained our muscles to relax and prevent new wrinkle formation.  Higher dosages Botox or Dysport treatment will produce longer durations, usually from 3-4 months to about 6-8 months. Discuss with us your preference so we can help you reduce wrinkles, look natural and refreshed.

What is the cost of Dysport/Botox?

Depending on the area size and muscle size, generally $300- $350 per area ( Frown Lines, Forehead, Crow’s Feet).  Smaller areas are $75-150 ( Brow Lift, corners of mouth, chin, upper/lower lip, neckbands).  For jawline reduction for V shape contour $600-700 for both sides.
